J.D. Clifton Head Start holds back to school bash

CALCASIEU PARISH, LA (KPLC) - Before kids head back to school on Wednesday in Calcasieu Parish, the Head Start Program at J.D. Clifton Elementary is helping to make sure that families are ready.

The program is federally funded and aims at helping families facing poverty. This year, they held a back to school bash to provide resources to parents for the upcoming school year.

"Nobody wants to live below their means, so this is outstanding to me, and it's just awesome to provide families with the tools they need for a better lifestyle," said Diana Bailey, site facilitator at Head Start. "If we can help Mom and Dad live an efficient life, which is with housing, employment and health care, then the child is more likely to be successful in education."

Parent Ebony Meche said she's eager to learn more: "The financial counseling, I think that's awesome. Everybody needs to know how to manage their money and funds, so that we can have a brighter future and be able to do things in our life, like purchase a home or a car."

About 200 students received backpacks and school supplies at Tuesday's event. Booths were set up to offer literacy help, first-time home buying advice and financial counseling.
