ACADIA PARISH, LA (KPLC) -

An Iota man was killed and a Basile man was injured in a single-vehicle accident Wednesday night in Acadia Parish, state police said.

Trooper Brooks David, spokesman for Troop I, said 42-year-old Joseph Joseph II died and 34-year-old Eric Bergeaux was injured when their vehicle crashed on La. 97 around 9:30 p.m.

David said Joseph, the driver, and Bergeaux were not wearing seat belts and were ejected from the vehicle.

Impairment is unknown and toxicology results are pending as the crash remains under investigation, David said.

"Louisiana law requires that every person in a motor vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up," David said. "Statistics show that the chances of surviving a violent crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Taking the time to buckle up before every trip is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash."
