BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden made history when he was elected the first African American mayor of Baton Rouge in 2004. Now he’s trying to make history again.

Holden announced Tuesday that he’s running for Lieutenant Governor. If elected he would become the first Black politician elected to a statewide office.

WAFB Political Analyst  Jim Engster says he's a formidable candidate.

"He has shown to be a capable politician," Engster says. "And he has shown a capacity to win the White votes. In his second race for mayor, he carried every precinct in the parish. Kip Holden isn't your typical politician."

Holden was re-elected to his third term as mayor in November 2012 by capturing 60 percent of the vote. He faces Billy Nungesser, a Republican who ran for the office in the last election.
