Police: Parents charged after 6 kids found infested with bugs, living with pigs

SPARTANBURG COUNTY, SC (WYFF) -

An Upstate man and woman are facing charges after officers found their six children living in filth, covered with fleas, lice and bug bites, according to the Wellford police.

Police said some of the children were attending vacation Bible school at Jackson Hill Baptist Church where staff noticed bug bites all over the children. A woman there said that when food was served, the children ate large amounts, sometimes three plates full, and said they needed to eat because they did not get to at home.

Last Thursday, officers went to the home on John Dodd Road to check on the welfare of the children. Officer said as they got close to the house, it smelled strongly of sewage. Authorities said there were two large and one small pig living under and around the home, and when they went inside, they found a fourth pig living in the house along with three dogs.

The officers said that there was animal feces and urine on the floor, and roaches were all over the walls and floors. Investigators said there were roaches and other insects all over the kitchen, including inside the stove and the refrigerator.

According to police, the bathtub was half filled with water and dead roaches and insects were floating in it.

The officers said the children were covered with bug bites and had fleas and lice in their hair, including a 23-month-old baby.

The children were put into emergency protective custody and transported to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center to be checked out.

The parents, 41-year-old Jarrod Wiggins and 22-year-old Deanna Boubaris, were arrested and charged with six counts of child neglect.

Wiggins and Bourbaris are being held in the Spartanburg County Detention Center.
