Quality issues shift production at CB&I facility in LC

Work at the Chicago Bridge & Iron Co. facility in Lake Charles, formerly known as Shaw of South Lake Charles, has shifted from producing larger pre-fabricated modules to smaller support pieces for Southern Co.'s Vogtle plant in Georgia.

The company builds components for nuclear reactors. However, questions have been raised about quality assurance over the last few years.

Southern Co. Spokesman Brian Green confirms, they are working with other companies to produce the larger modules and CB&I will now produce smaller pieces such as piping, valves or instrumentation. However, Green said by no means is the company phasing out its work with the Lake Charles facility.

"There are concerns over quality, but we feel that the Lake Charles facility has the potential to produce the larger modules down the line. That's a real possibility we're not ruling out," said Green.

Green went on to say there have been challenges along the way because this is a first of its kind project. He said they feel good about the progress and direction the company is going.
