Storm damage in Nogales and Tubac

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The storms that swept through Santa Cruz County on Friday afternoon left behind a lot of damage in Nogales and Tubac.

The Nogales wash was gushing all day. The waters rose and overflowed from the banks, sweeping away barricades and vehicles in its path.

A blue sedan parked near a bridge between Grand Avenue and Hohokam Drive took a beating as it swept down the wash. The waters left behind a muddy mess after they receded.

Sandy Valenzuela, who was staying at a nearby hotel, described the storm.

"It was the wierdest thing. It was like a microburst, it was raining, it was hailing, wind was hard, it was all coming at an angle," said Valenzuela.

Heavy lightning in the area also caused a tree in front of the Nogales Police station to catch on fire.

Valenzuela said at first, there just a small trickle of water in the wash."

"I said, wow. I hope it doesn't rain in Mexico, then we're really going to get it. Then it started to rise and a big surf came in," said Valenzuela.

The winds shattered the glass at the Department of Economic Security off Mariposa road.

Many business owners along the Nogales wash were prepared for the storm by placing sand bags and boards at their front doors, but that did not prevent the waters from creeping in.

In Tubac, heavy winds knocked down at least two power poles and ripped the roof off a parking structure off Frontage road.

No injuries have been reported, just a big muddy mess left for residents to clean up.
