QUITMAN, TX (KLTV) -

The bodies of two young girls found dead in their family's Quitman apartment Thursday morning are being sent for autopsy.

Officials say a man at the Dogwood Villa apartment complex off of Earlene Drive in Quitman called 911 and said a two- and three-year-old girl were not breathing.

"They're gone and there's not really much else you can say about it," says Dalton German with tears in his eyes. German lives across the parking lot from the little girls.

"It's hard because everybody sees the girls and everyone tends to help the girls, watch them, help take care of them," says Danielle Frey, another one of the girls' neighbors.

Frey also works with the girls' mother and says she babysat the girls.

"The kids are great. I watched them every so often when I was off work. They're good girls, they are, they don't deserve this," Frey said.

Frey and several others say the girls were like their nieces.

"I've helped them out with their alphabet, handshakes, all the good stuff," says German.

"Sunday they sat at the picnic table and looked up at my window and said, 'Granny!' for the first time. Do you know how that felt, hearing them call me for the first time when they couldn't talk in the beginning?" says Selma Bell, a long-time resident at Dogwood Villa Apartments.

One of the owners of this apartment complex says police have been called to the apartments before, but nothing this serious has ever happened.

"We have domestic violence calls and things like that. Anything else happens and I solve it," Bell says.

Investigators taped off the apartment complex parking lot and started pulling evidence from the family's apartment. They also spent time searching and photographing nearby dumpsters.

"All I can say is you keep your kids safe and close to you, because you never know when they are going to be here today and gone tomorrow," says Bell.

Thursday's incident is a reality the Dogwood Villa community never thought they would face.

The Texas Rangers are involved in the investigation. Police are not releasing the names of the girls. The Quitman Police Department is expected to release more information Friday morning.
