TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

Tyler Independent School District named a lone finalist for superintendent position during Thursday night's board meeting.

The lone finalist for superintendent is Dr. Marty Crawford.

In a press release from Tyler ISD, Crawford said, “I am honored to be named the lone finalist for the superintendent position at Tyler ISD. I am excited to work with the District’s students, faculty and staff to meet and exceed our goals. Together we will be able to continue moving forward in achieving academic excellence.”

Dr. Crawford has served as the Superintendent of Schools for the West Independent School District for six years. Leading a long list of credentials, he has most notably overseen the recovery of the District’s school system after the April 17, 2013, fertilizer plant explosion that destroyed three campuses, leveled more than 150 homes, displaced and injured hundreds, and took 15 lives from the community.

Crawford earned his Texas superintendent certification and a doctorate in educational administration from Texas A&M Commerce. He holds a Bachelor of Education from Baylor and a Master of Education from The University of Oklahoma. Tyler ISD says he has worked in Dallas ISD, Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD, Highland Park ISD as well as Oklahoma City Public Schools. He has held various professional positions at the high school, middle school, and elementary school levels as well.

Dr. Crawford and his wife Alanna have two daughters, Ashton, 17, a recent high school graduate, and A.J., 4, who will begin pre-K in August. They have a son, as well, Jackson, who is 12 and will be in 7th grade this year.

Kim Tunnell, who has worked in Tyler ISD administration for 13 years, was named interim superintendent on June 23. Tunnell filled the gap created when former Superintendent Gary Mooring’s resignation became official on June 30.
