United, Kingsgate launch programs to help provide supplies for back to school

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

It's Back to School shopping season, but for some families, providing basic school supplies can be a struggle.

Here are two ways you can help:

First, United Supermarkets kicked off the "Project SOS: Supply our Students" school supply drive for local students in need at 82nd & Boston on Thursday morning.

Guests can donate at any United Supermarkets, Market Street, or Amigos location in Lubbock or Slaton through August 12.

Shopper can drop of donations at barrels located at the stores, or make a cash donation during check out. Supplies will be given to students at LISD, LCISD, FISD, Roosevelt ISD, and Slaton ISD.

Also, Kingsgate Center is teaming up with Sprouts and The Bridge of Lubbock for the Kingsgate Center Backpack to School Drive.

From July 25 through August 15, new or gently used backpacks can be donated to any of the drop off locations on the north and south sides of Kingsgate Center, located at 82nd Street and Quaker Avenue.

Donated backpacks will be filled with school supplies donated by Kingsgate Center and healthy snacks provided by Sprouts Farmers Market.

Filled backpacks will be donated to The Bridge of Lubbock and distributed at their annual Bridge Bash on August 23rd from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

"The Bridge Bash allows us to give clothes and school supplies to at risk youth and low income families, not just in Lubbock but also the surrounding communities," said Ashlei Watson, Director of Outreach. "Last year we helped over 250 families in need at the Bridge Bash, so we are excited about the Kingsgate Backpack Drive to help fill those needs."

Backpacks may be dropped off at any of these participating businesses:

Kingsgate Center North: Marble Slab, Great Clips, The Pavilion, House of Flowers, and Pei Wei

Kingsgate Center South: City Bank, Banana Republic, Alterations Unlimited, and Anderson Bros Jewelers
