The Andersons named as "in talks" over former Southwyck Mall site

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Local chain The Andersons may be involved in the process to turn the barren former site of the Southwyck Mall into a thriving Toledo development.

The site where the mall once stood on Reynolds Road has been an eyesore since the mall closed six years ago. As Toledo City Council considers what to do with the property, City Councilman Rob Ludeman says council has talked to The Andersons about possibly moving their corporate headquarters there.

The plans came up at an agenda review session for City Council on Tuesday. Councilman Ludeman says he hopes talks with The Andersons continue.

"It's a household name in all of northwest Ohio," Ludeman said. "[They're] a great family, a great organization, and if that ends up being our end user, our developer, it would be great."

Andersons officials have made no comment yet.

Ludeman has asked his colleagues on City Council to meet in private executive session after their next regular council meeting to further discuss potential buyers.

"Make sure everybody is on the same page," he said. "This is too big a development to have any misinformation out there."

South Toledo resident and Councilwoman Sandy Spang backs Ludeman's strategy.

"You know, transparency is very important, and the citizens deserve to know what's happening in their city, but there are a few occasions when we do go into executive session," Spang said.

Both council members say the city is close to something "big" happening at Southwyck.
