LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

A 33-year-old Sulphur woman was shot Tuesday night while trying to run over a Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's deputy, authorities said.

Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Kim Myers said Evelyn M. Dargin was shot once and is facing charges of attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, criminal damage to property, resisting arrest and numerous traffic violations.

Authorities said Dargin has a lengthy criminal history, including an arrests on charges of theft and bank fraud in 2004, resisting an officer and operating a vehicle with a suspended license in 2008 and marijuana possession and cruelty to a juvenile in January 2014.

Myers said Dargin was transported to a local hospital and her condition is unknown at this time.

"We do not want to shoot anybody, but when a person comes at you with a vehicle we treat that just like a weapon and he had to stop that threat," said Sheriff Tony Mancuso.

The incident began around 9 p.m. when a deputy tried to pull over Dargin near the intersection of Evans and Carr streets in Lake Charles, Myers said.

Dargin twice stopped and got out of her car before jumping back in and fleeing when the deputy approached.

"The pursuit ended in the 300 block of North Louisiana Avenue," Myers said. "Dargin struck a patrol unit and then headed toward a deputy who was stopped and outside his patrol unit. Dargin continued to proceed toward the deputy when the deputy fired one shot."

The deputy was not injured. Two other people were in Dargin's vehicle, including a minor, and both were uninjured.

Mancuso has requested that state police investigate the incident.

"They will likely rely on the video from the deputy's car," he said. "We'll download the video and give it to state police as evidence and also use it as our evidence on the criminal side of the charges."

Both deputies were uninjured and have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure during an ongoing investigation.
