LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - The Longview Police Department is searching for a suspect who police say shot a man while he was sitting by a pool in Longview.

Witnesses say a man was shot in the head while sitting by the pool Tuesday night at the Guthrie Creek apartments off of Baylor Drive. They say the shooter just walked up behind the man and fired. Officers say the suspect then fled the scene.

A man who lives at the apartment complex says he heard a loud bang and came face to face with the shooter when he opened his front door.

"It sounded like a firecracker at first and then I realized it was a gunshot. I stepped outside and I saw this lady and this guy walking to me and he was putting a gun in his pocket so I said, 'Oh, let me step back in,'" says Kenneth Smith, a resident at the Guthrie Creek Apartments.

Smith says the next time he looked outside, the man and woman were gone.

Witnesses say the victim was sitting at a table by the pool when he was shot. They say the bullet hit him in the back of the head and came out near his cheek. The victim went inside the apartment complex office and waited for an ambulance. He was transported to Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview, where he was released later Tuesday night.

His injuries do not appear to be life-threatening, according to Longview Public Information Officer Kristie Brian.

Smith says the pool was full of people, including children, when the shooting happened. He says he can't stop thinking about what could have happened, "My granddaughter was just going crazy and wanted to go to the pool and I told her no. I'm so glad I didn't let her go, a bullet don't have no name on it."

Smith says he has never seen the victim or the shooter before Tuesday night. Another witness says neither of the men lived at the Guthrie Creek Apartments.

Longview police have not released the name of the victim. Officers say they are searching for several suspects in this case, but would not give any description of those suspects or the vehicles they might be driving.

For the Oakdale Police Department one of their constant battles isn't necessarily with criminals, but instead with their phones. Their phone lines were down for most of the weekend, and just got back up yesterday, but this isn't the first time they've dealt with this.  The phones are ringing at the Oakdale Police Department now, but this past weekend that wasn’t the case.  “Friday evening our phones went down,” said police chief, Joseph Lockett. ...More >>
