Big season for Southwest Louisiana baseball teams

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

Southwest Louisiana has long been a baseball hotbed.

From appearances in the Little League World Series, state and national titles at the high school level and sending players to the college/pro ranks, there has always been plenty of talent in our area.

This summer is shaping up to be one of the area's best ever.

South Lake Charles

The South Lake Charles 12-year-old All-Stars beat Bossier City 8-5 Wednesday night to advance to the Little League Southwest Regional.

The regional is set for Aug. 1-6 in Waco, Texas.

The winner of the Southwest Regional gets a berth into the Little League World Series, which is set for Aug. 14-24 in Williamsport, Pa.

The South Lake Charles big league team (16-18 year olds) also won a state title earlier this month but lost in the regional round, the junior league squad (13-14 year olds) beat Bogalusa Tuesday night for a state title and the minor league team (10-11 year olds) captured a state crown with a win Wednesday night.

The junior division team will now play in the Southwest Regional, which is scheduled for Aug. 1-6 in New Mexico. The regional winner gets a spot in the Junior League World Series, which is played in Taylor, Mich.

Moss Bluff

The Moss Bluff 11-year-old All-Stars are playing this weekend in the in the Dixie Youth Regional World Series in Longview, Texas.

Kinder

The Kinder 8u All-Stars won 19-1 Wednesday in the opening round of the Pony Pinto World Series in Schertz, Texas. They will play again at 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

    Melissa Gregory spends her sunny days outdoors feeding ducks near the Lake Charles Veterans Memorial Park. "It's perfect conditions," said Gregory about the sunny day because it helps her relax and get rid of stress, but lately with all the rain she's been feeling stressed. "I feel kind of cooped up and I feel like I can't go outside, and I have to hide under the roof or stay in the house or hide under the umbrella," she said.
