WAVELAND, MS (WLOX) -

The Waveland Police Department has been bounced around from place to place since Hurricane Katrina destroyed its Highway 90 location nine years ago. Its most recent location is the cramped quarters of a mobile home on Coleman Avenue.

"It's difficult whenever you take an operation like this. We're 24/7. We've got people on the road. We've got investigators.

We've got secretaries. We've got admin. We've got patrol, and it's very disrupting to pick up and move," said Waveland Police Chief David Allen.

To say the department needs more space might be an understatement.. They share the trailer with the court department and the city prosecutor.

"It's been tight, but we've made it work. We understand the situation," said Allen.

Construction on the Johnny Longo-Donald Dorn Public Safety Complex could resume any day now. The work was halted nearly two years ago after a construction conflict between the city and the contractor doing the work.

"We've resolved the issue, come up with a cure for the problem. Sent it to FEMA, FEMA has had it for a month now, the mitigation division, and they are reviewing the plans now for their approval. Once they stamp off on it, we should be able to get the project back underway," said Waveland Mayor David Garcia.

Once the building, which will house the police as well as the court department, is finished it will mark an important post Katrina milestone for the city.

"That's our last big contract we need to close out. That's our last big project work sheet to close out. We will be able to move on from Katrina at that point," said Garcia.
