Wounded Henrico Food Lion security guard: 'I'm ready to go back to work'

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

The security guard who was shot outside a Henrico Food Lion this week is breaking his silence. The 45-year-old veteran and father of five talked about those frightening moments and how he's recovering.

"It was just blood everywhere," said security guard Michael, who is not yet ready to reveal his full identity. "I didn't know where I was hit or how bad I was hit. It was very scary. I thought I was going to die."

Michael was shot at point-blank range in the back of the head.

"It severed part of the ear," said Michael. "I didn't feel pain until later on...much later on. It was like a big loud firecracker landed on my shoulder."

K-9 units were brought in and the police plane took to the skies in search of the person behind the shooting.

"With it being point-blank, the blast took some of my hearing temporarily," said Michael.

Michael says he is thankful for the people who came to his aide.

"I'm ready to go back to work," said Michael. "I'm okay, but I would like to tell everybody that did help…thank you. They made a difference."

Michael says he would even consider going back to the Food Lion where the incident happened.

"If my employer needs me there," said Michael. "I will do what the company needs. Yes. I would return to the store."

He was encouraged to see police take to the streets canvassing nearby neighborhoods for a person of interest.

"They wanted to know if I might have known this person," said Michael. "I didn't know him. I don't know anybody over there."

Henrico police released a new photo on Wednesday of a person of interest in the shooting. The photo shows an unidentified man in the frozen food aisle.

Detectives need help identifying and finding him, so they can speak with him about Monday evening's shooting in the 3000 block of Mechanicsville Turnpike.

Police say the last time anyone saw the shooter, he was running towards Oak Hill Lane.
