(WMC) - Shelby County Commissioners spent Wednesday talking about drawing new rules to make sure their peers actually live in the districts they represent.

This comes as the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation looks into whether Commissioner Henri Brooks lives in District 2.

Some voters say Brooks' residency investigation is nothing more than a waste of money.

"To me, worrying about where she's going to be, 'She doesn't live in the area.' Fine. She's leaving in a month. Let's move on," Angela Brookings said

But the law is the law, elected officials have to live in the district they represent.

"I think they should live in their district, because the people in that district did vote for them," Virginia Muchmore said.

Commissioner Steve Mulroy proposed clarifying exactly what residency means.

"I'm single. I might sleep anywhere, to be perfectly honest," Commission Chairman James Harvey said.

Commissioner Brooks' seat remained empty all afternoon. Commissioner Justin Ford slipped out before the meeting ended. His residency was under fire earlier this year, but the county attorney determined he lived in his district.

At the end of Wednesday's meeting, the county attorney said the only way to create residency rules is to amend the county charter, and that would require Shelby County citizens to vote on the question.
