Mom faces charges after infant tests positive for alcohol

RUSSELLVILLE, AL (WAFF) - A Franklin County woman was arrested after police said her 5-week-old baby tested positive for alcohol. Russellville police said they received a call about an unresponsive baby last week. When medical crews arrived at the home, the infant was responsive, but they transported him to the hospital as a precaution.

When they arrived at the emergency room, medical staff detected the smell of alcohol and called police.

Officers brought in a breathalyzer and detected alcohol in the baby's system. The breathalyzer was performed by attaching a funnel where the test strips attach - the funnel then allows them to monitor the breath when the infant exhales.

Investigators said a blood test requested following the breathalyzer showed the 5-week-old tested positive for a .283 alcohol level.

Katherine Putman, the infant's mother, told investigators she apparently mixed what she thought was water left in a water bottle with her child's cereal. Police said it was vodka. Police Chief Chris Hargett said that is not only alarming, but uncalled for under any situation.

"It's almost like a death sentence for that baby's blood alcohol level to be that high... any amount, it's just uncalled for," he said. "The fact that you got a 5-week-old baby in the house and alcohol in water bottles is alarming within itself. Your main concern should be the health of your child."

Putman was charged with first degree domestic violence. She was released from jail on $50,000 bond. The child is expected to be okay.
