(WMC) - Like a rookie hitting a dinger in his first plate appearance, the newest spot on Midtown's Overton Square just rocked the High Score of the Week.

Babalu, 2115 Madison Ave., earned a 98 on its July 6 health inspection.

Airy and wide-open -- with a trendy open-air bar serving both indoor and outdoor guests and silent episodes of I Love Lucy projected on the walls -- Babalu is a place where friends and family don't have to scream to hear themselves talk.

Customers scarf on salads, sandwiches, gourmet tacos and small-portion dishes (tapas) designed for sharing.

"That's the way we do it here," said Babalu's Executive Chef Tim Antignane.

"Family-style!" fawned customer Geraldina Kratzke of East Memphis. As a Latino, she loves Babalu's smaller-serving, order-a-bunch-with-friends kind of fare.

"The food is very much related to Central America, Latin America from where I come from, and it's just wonderful to come here," she said.

"(For the tacos) we're doing blue 'from masa' tortillas, made from scratch," Antignane said, as employees balled and rolled out the tortillas right in front of us.

Also right in front of us, guacamole made table-side -- with avocado, sun-dried tomatoes, red & green onions, Kosher salt, cilantro and lime juice. The staff agreed it's the most popular thing on the menu.

WHAT ANDY LIKES:  Guacamole Made Table-Side, Lamb Barbacoa Taco, Pan-Roasted Redfish Tapas. Click Here for Babalu's Menu.
