Calcasieu libraries announce programs for July 20-26

CALCASIEU PARISH, LA (KPLC) - The following is a news release from Calcasieu Parish Public Library:

Various Calcasieu Parish Public Library locations have announced the following programs for July 20-26:

Programs for adults:

Central Library, 301 W. Claude Street, 721-7116

Friends of the Library-Calcasieu Book Sale:  3:00 p.m., Sunday, July 20. The Friends of the Library-Calcasieu will have books for sale until 5:00 p.m.

Science of the Body – Yoga:  6:00 p.m., Monday, July 21.  Linda Kleinschmidt, instructor of T’ai Chi Chih, will teach adults the fundamentals of yoga.  Attendees are asked to wear comfortable clothes and shoes that can be easily removed.  Please bring a yoga mat or towel.  Registration is required. 

Friends of the Library-Calcasieu Book Sale:  10:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 22. The Friends of the Library-Calcasieu will have books for sale until 12:00 p.m.

Tasty Appetizers Demo and Tasting:  2:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 23.  Adults will learn how to make tasty appetizers.  Registration is required.

Microsoft Word Basics:  9:30 a.m., Thursday, July 24.  Adults will cover the basics of the Microsoft Word program, including creating a saving a document, simple formatting, spell check, clip art, and more.  Registration is required.

Friends of the Library-Calcasieu Book Sale:  4:00 p.m., Thursday, July 24. The Friends of the Library-Calcasieu will have books for sale until 6:00 p.m.

3D Thursdays:  5:00 p.m., Thursday, July 24.  Visit the Central Library Innovation Studio every Thursday from 5-7 to learn all about 3D printing and design. 

Maker Hours and 3D Printing 101:  10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 26.  Join us for a special Maker Hour.  The first hour will include a crash course in 3D printing, followed by an hour of free time to tinker with this and other fun technology.

DeQuincy Library, 102 W. Harrison St., 721-7087, 786-4213 (DeQuincy residents)

Pick the Date: During branch hours through summer.  Adults will participate in the passive manipulative board that will remind them of upcoming programs.

Fontenot Memorial Library, 1402 Center St., Vinton, 721-7095

Coffee and History:  9:30 a.m., Monday, July 21.  Patrons in the community will share photos and articles of history about the surrounding area.

Starks Library, 113 S. Hwy. 109, 743-6560 (Starks residents) or 721-7107

Take a Guess:  During branch hours throughout summer.  Teens will pull a form and guess the pictures that have been enlarged.  Prizes will be given for those who turn them in.

Popcorn and a Movie:  3:00 p.m., Friday, July 25.  Families will enjoy free refreshments and a movie.

Epps Memorial Library, 1320 North Simmons St., 721-7090

Grandparents Reading Time:  11:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 22.  Grandparents and grandkids will enjoy stories together.  Refreshments will be served and giveaways will be announced.

    The State Bond Commission has awarded Calcasieu and Vernon parishes millions of dollars for public improvement projects, State Treasurer Ron Henson announced Friday. The commission approved $290.7 million for projects statewide during its August meeting, according to Henson's office.

    Melissa Gregory spends her sunny days outdoors feeding ducks near the Lake Charles Veterans Memorial Park. "It's perfect conditions," said Gregory about the sunny day because it helps her relax and get rid of stress, but lately with all the rain she's been feeling stressed. "I feel kind of cooped up and I feel like I can't go outside, and I have to hide under the roof or stay in the house or hide under the umbrella," she said.
