A man wanted for attempted murder and domestic battery has been eluding police for nearly a month has turned himself in.

The DeQuincy Police Department tells 7 News that Jon Dalton McCarty turned himself in at the Calcasieu Correctional Center Friday evening.

He's wanted on charges of attempted second degree murder and domestic abuse battery.

Jon McCarty is jailed on a $300,000 bond.

Detective Tom Threet says they suspect friends and relatives have been helping McCarty avoid arrest:

"This morning we received information that he was at his father's house.  An eyewitness said that he saw him there. And we just missed him by a matter of minutes this morning. The sheriff's office sent nine units and a K-9 to assist us," said Threet.

Threet says they believe McCarty spent the last night here at his dad's house on North Grand.

"Now his father is going to be facing charges of accessory after the fact."

The father of the suspect says the stabbing was actually in self defense when someone who was told to leave his house refused.

Police say the man stabbed was treated in a local hospital and released.
