A 21-year-old Leesville woman has been accused of stealing almost $700 from an elderly woman, authorities said.

Vernon Parish Sheriff Sam Craft said Melodie Sheree Lowens was arrested Thursday on charges of exploitation of the infirmed and identity theft.

Craft said the victim, an 81-year-old female resident at a local care facility, had a checking account with $688.95 in fraudulent debit card charges.

Lowens, who worked at the care facility, allegedly used the victim’s debit card to pay utility bills, personal bills and fast food purchases, Craft said.

Lowens remains in the Vernon Parish Jail on a $7,000 bond.
