Tennessee's First Lady turning garden into teaching tool

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Tennessee's first lady Crissy Haslam is turning the garden at the Governor's Residence into a teaching tool for young children.

There are walkways built in so visitors can learn about the plants and help care for them.

"Now we have children coming and helping us harvest the vegetables and we want them to know where their food comes from and we want them to taste fresh vegetables. Sometimes they'll say that those vegetables taste better than the ones that they've had before," Haslam said.

For the first lady, it's about more than just teaching kids about where their food comes from, it's about introducing new food that may change a child's eating habits early on.

"We want children to be going home and telling their parents, 'Let's try to grow some vegetables and let's watch them grow.' It's a lot of fun," Haslam said.

All of the food grown in the garden is used in the kitchen at the Governor's Mansion on a daily basis.
