TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Residents of one east Toledo neighborhood say they're concerned about the increase in crime in their area.

Kevin Velte has lived on the 500 block of Church Street for six years, and he says crime has increased dramatically during that time. Velte says arsonists are constantly starting fires and thieves break into homes in the neighborhood, including his own.

"It's getting a little bit crazy, and a little too close to home," he said.

An intruder broke into Velte's home Wednesday night through the kitchen window. Fortunately, Velte was able to scare off the intruder, but his daughter Jessica Tucker fears for her dad's safety.

"I'm absolutely terrified, because he called me at 1:30 in the morning saying his house got broken into, that there was somebody standing in the kitchen," Tucker said. "And for me being not even 10 minutes away, still, I couldn't have gotten here in time if something would have happened."

Velte and Tucker are hopeful the police will increase their presence in the neighborhood.
