SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A mother has been charged after deputies said it was reported her children were on numerous unnecessary medications and undergoing unnecessary medical procedures.

Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office public information officer Kevin Bobo said Janna Smith-Johnson, 36, of Chesnee, was charged after an extensive investigation which required the gathering of voluminous medical records.

According to Bobo, they began an investigation in April after being notified by a forensic pediatrician about concerns over the welfare of Smith-Johnson's four children.

He said the pediatrician's main concern was that she had them "on numerous unnecessary medications and undergoing unnecessary medical procedures."

Investigators placed all four children into emergency protective custody so they could get a proper diagnosis, according to Bobo.

He said the children's health improved immensely after that.

According to a deputy's report, one child was on 39 different medications and did not attend school. The report also said two of the children were seeing over 10 specialists.

The report said one of the children was constantly sleeping at school and will have to repeat a grade due to not doing homework and failing the grade due to constantly sleeping.

An investigator presented her findings to a magistrate judge on Thursday who issued one warrant for felony child abuse and four warrants for unlawful neglect of a child for Smith-Johnson, Bobo said.

"Investigation has also suggested a strong possibility that the mother was going around to individuals and businesses, talking about her perceived diagnosis of her children's medical conditions in an effort to receive money," Bobo said in an email to the media.

He asks anyone who was approached by Smith-Johnson and feels like they are the victim of a financial crime to call Senior Investigator Nicki Cantrell at 864-503-4604.

Smith-Johnson is currently being held at the Spartanburg County Detention Center. She was given a $125,000 surety bond on Thursday night.

According to a deputy's report, the children have been placed in DSS custody for similar situations in the past.

This rain is caused from a cold front that will stall over us, or slow down by Sunday. This will allow the rain to last most of our Sunday.
