An account has been set up with St. Martin Bank and Trust for Jennings police officer Ricky J. Benoit, who was shot in the line of duty on June 23.

Viewers who want to make a donation can do so at any St. Martin Bank location or by calling 337-824-2300. The name of the account is the Ricky Benoit Benefit.

On Thursday, the Jennings Police Department posted an update on Benoit to its Facebook page.

"Today was a good day for Ricky in his road to recovery," the post read. "We are hoping that he gets final approval to be sent to New Orleans to a spinal specialist center."

Benoit was shot in the neck while responding to a domestic dispute. The suspect, 30-year-old George D. Lowdins, has been charged with attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, resisting an officer by flight and domestic abuse battery.

Police Chief Todd D'Albor said the fundraising effort will help with Benoit's non-medical bills.

The Louisiana Law Enforcement Support group is also selling T-shirts to help raise money for Benoit. You can purchase a T-shirt or make a donation at https://www.booster.com/benoitrecovery. As of 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, they have sold 223 shirts and raised $3,110.
