It's not a contract, but Lake Charles Firefighters aren't complaining. At Wednesday night’s City Council meeting, the council approved entering into a “Memorandum of Understanding” with the Firefighters Union Local 561.

Firefighters have been working without a contract for nearly three years. While it does not address pay or benefits, Union Representative Chief Chris Carroll said it gives them something to work with and improve on.

"Basically, the memorandum of understanding addresses some of the things that we had concerns about and benefits that we had lost when we lost our contract, or gave our contract away. Now, that we have a memorandum of understanding it opens up doors and future negotiations to get better things and bring more things back for the department and for the guys,” said Carroll.

The memorandum of understanding is for one year.
