City renames Drew Park building in honor of Willie McCullor Landry

Posted: Updated:
The Lake Charles City Council renamed the building at Drew Park in honor of the late Willie McCullor Landry. It will now be called the “Willie McCullor Landry Community Center.”

Landry passed away June 18th at the age of 93. She was recreation supervisor at Drew Park for 31 years before retiring in 1983. Her family, including daughter, former Lake Charles Mayor and State Senator Willie Mount, was there for the honor.

"This would be so meaningful to mom. Obviously, it's special to us. She's ‘Big Willie.’ What can I say... I just said yes ma'am - how high do you want me to jump or whatever she asked me to do. But it's been so meaningful to us as we celebrated her life. We know mom is in heaven playing ping pong.  And we miss her, but we are happy for her. So thank you so very much. And for the family... Thank you,” said Mount.

The city plans to hold a formal dedication of the renaming of the building in the very near future.
