Officials at the West Calcasieu Port on Tuesday cut the ribbon on a new barge loading ramp.

They said the old ramp suffered considerable wear and tear over the years, including damage from two hurricanes.

The new ramps will cater to the growing oil and gas exploration in Southwest Louisiana.

"It will enable us to meet the growing demand for what we call intermodal transportation, driving wheeled vehicles off the road onto a barge, then the barge will push them to wherever they need to go," said port director Lynn Hohensee. "Whether they are carrying equipment or materials, it offers a lot of flexibility as we grow our region."

It was paid for by port tenants and the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury.
