A Westlake family is safe after an overnight fire behind their home on Wednesday.

The Westlake Fire Department, along with Ward 1 and the Lake Charles Fire Departments, responded to a report of a structure fire on Miller Avenue a little after midnight early Wednesday morning.

A shed and carport were engulfed by the time residents discovered it.

The fire quickly spread and destroyed the shed, 3 vehicles, two boats, a tractor and a golf cart. The house was spared, and everyone made it out safely.

Westlake Fire Chief Jacques Picou describes the scene as first responders arrived: "It was totally engulfed when we pulled up. Residents heard something and went back and looked and it was already totally involved. They called 911, we responded and extinguished the fire."

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
