How about New York Strip Steak for the Fourth of July holiday instead of plain burgers

New York Strip Steak with a mushroom cream sauce

Strip steak ingredients and directions

  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 garlic cloves, smashed
  • 2 Tablespoons all-purpose seasoning
  • 1 Tablespoon red wine vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 4 eight ounce New York strip steaks
Mix everything together (except the steaks) in a shallow glass baking dish and set aside.  Pierce steaks on all sides with a fork and place in marinade.  Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.  Sear over high heat and cook to desired doneness.

Mushroom sauce ingredients and directions
  • 3 Tablespoons butter
  • 2 shallots, minced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 4 oz. sliced button mushrooms
  • 1 teaspoon dry basil
  • 1 teaspoon dry oregano
  • 6 Tablespoons white wine
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • Sea salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 teaspoon flour
Heat butter in a thick bottomed skillet over medium heat until foamy.  Cook and stir shallots and garlic in the melted butter for 3 minutes. Add mushrooms and herbs and stir for 1 minute.  Pour 4 tablespoons white wine into mushroom mixture and cook until mushrooms are golden brown, about 3 to 5 minutes.  Increase heat to medium-high, add cream and 2 tablespoons white wine.  Cook and stir until gravy is creamy and thick, about 5 minutes.  Season with salt and pepper.

A group of boys are taking their love for baseball off the field and into the backyard. And no, this isn't a scene out of the 1993 classic "The Sandlot." It’s happening right here in Lake Charles.

At the David household, there's something special going on in the backyard.

“One day in the backyard we came out here and decided to start playing around,” said Dylan David, who started a Wiffle ball league with his friends.
