JENNINGS, LA (KPLC) -

State police have released the identity of the man accused of shooting a Jennings police officer.

Sgt. James Anderson, spokesman for Troop D, said George D. Lowdins has been charged with attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, resisting an officer by flight and domestic abuse battery.

Lowdins, 30, has been accused of shooting officer Ricky J. Benoit during a domestic disturbance at a home in the 100 block of East South Street on Monday.

"Officers gave loud verbal commands instructing (Lowdins) to come out of hiding but he did not respond," Anderson said Tuesday in a news release. "While searching the residence, Sgt. Benoit was shot in the neck by with a .380 caliber pistol. Lowdins had been hiding in a bathroom closet. After firing the shot, Lowdins attempted to flee the scene but was subdued by the other Jennings police officer."

Anderson said the 52-year-old Benoit remains hospitalized in critical condition.

State police took over the investigation at the request of the Jennings Police Department. Investigators arrived and were assisted by state police Troop D and Troop I as well as the Jennings Police Department, Jefferson Davis Parish Sheriff's Office and the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office Forensic Investigations Unit.
