SOWELA Technical Community College has been granted accreditation through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The accreditation was affirmed at a Thursday meeting of the SACS Commission on Colleges.

"This is a great day for SOWELA," said Dr. Neil Aspinwall, Chancellor at SOWELA. "This accomplishment is a tribute to every member of the college's faculty and staff, and we can all take pride in the fact that the SACSCOC accreditation is a stamp of approval that verifies the quality, integrity, and excellence of our programs, services, campus, faculty, and staff."

SOWELA began its accreditation process about 10 years ago, with delays due to major hurricanes and damage to the campus. In 2012, SOWELA was given candidacy for accreditation.

"At that point, the College began an 18-month Compliance Certification Process that ended with an additional site team visit in November 2013," said SOWELA in a news release.

"The accreditation team assessed the College and reported a status of 'No Recommendations' to the Commission, which meant that SOWELA had met all the criteria in the 90 standards contained in the Compliance Certification process," the news release said.

SOWELA now joins about 800 other regionally accredited colleges and universities in the southern and southeastern U.S.

It's hard for many to find affordable rental housing in the Lake Area - which makes those locating here from out of town perhaps even more vulnerable. Realtor Betsy Watkins says in the last couple of weeks three people sent deposit money to a scammer on Craigslist to rent a house on Hackberry Street in Lake Charles. Problem is, the house is for sale, not for rent.
