A 37-year-old Westlake man is facing numerous charges after texting while driving drunk, causing a crash and having an unrestrained 8-year-old in the vehicle, state police said.

Sgt. James Anderson, spokesman for Troop D, said Brent Hetzler has been charged with fifth-offense DWI with child endangerment, tampering with an interlock device, driving left of center, texting while driving and no seat belt.

Anderson said state police responded to a two-vehicle crashing on Nevils Bluff Road near Kinder Saturday afternoon.

"Hetzler crossed the center line of the road," Anderson said Sunday in a news release. "The driver of the other vehicle reacted in an effort to avoid a crash. Hetzler, who was texting, drove his vehicle into the front of the other vehicle, causing minor damage to both vehicles."

Anderson said Hetzler tested over the legal limit for alcohol and neither he nor the child were wearing seat belts. Troopers also reported Hetzler had disabled the ignition interlock device on his vehicle.

Hetzler was booked into the Allen Parish Jail.

"Impaired driving and distracted driving are leading causes of crashes in our state," Anderson said. "Combing the two significantly increases the likelihood of a crash. While impaired driving is never acceptable behavior, driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs with children in the vehicle carries enhanced penalties under Louisiana state law."

To report impaired drivers, motorists are encouraged to dial *LSP (*577) or to contact their local law enforcement agency.
