PETAL, MS (WDAM) -

An organization known for building houses for deserving families in the Hattiesburg area is now constructing a garden which will help feed the local community. Members of the Hattiesburg Area Habitat for Humanity and Pine Belt Master Gardeners Saturday completed Phase One of the Habitat Petal Community Garden.

It's located on McInnis Avenue, behind several homes that have been built by that organization.

It was started with a $5,000 grant from Hattiesburg's Jarden Consumer Solutions.

Garden spaces are available for rent.  A single raised bed can be rented for $5 per month and a module with five raised beds can be rented for $25 per month.

"It's open to be planted, whatever you choose...you rent your space and you put in it what you like," said Laura Goodwin-Wright, resources development and communications manager for the Hattiesburg Area Habitat for Humanity. "We just wanted to be a good neighbor and put the property to a productive use," she said.

For more information, you can call 601-582-4663 or contact Laura Goodwin-Wright at LLGWright@hattiesburghabitat.org.
