LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

An annual event which benefits a homeless shelter and recovery center in Laurel has raised more than $33,000.

A total of 377 people participated in the 2nd annual Mission at the Cross 5K Run and 2 Mile Walk Saturday.

Organizers had hoped to raise at least $25,000 to help operate the Mission at the Cross, which can house up to 21 men at one time.

"(The race participants) are all well aware of the Mission and we tell them and explain to them what we do here and I think it's just a great cause and people want to come help that and help their community," said Dee Dee Lowery, race director.

Since its founding in 2008, the Mission at the Cross has helped about 600 men.
