Up to $20 million expected for local economy from Youth Soccer Championship

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

From June 19 -26, thousands of the top soccer talent from 12 states will be in Baton Rouge at the Burbank Soccer Complex for the Region 3 Youth Championships. The Baton Rouge area is possibly looking at nearly 14,000 visitors for this event. With 205 teams and about 4,200 participants ranging between the ages of 13 and 19, many will be staying in the metro area filling up hotels.

This of course means big bucks being brought into the city. The Baton Rouge Sports Foundation estimates that between $15 and $20 million will be brought into the local economy. The championship is only one of the major events this summer to give the area excellent exposure. Other events include Bayou Country Superfest and the Miss USA Pageant.

This is the second time the event is back in the capital city in five years. On June 19 the Baton Rouge River Center hosted the opening ceremony for the event. Returning to the competition this year are nine defending US Youth Soccer Region 3 Champions. This includes local side 97 Louisiana Fire Navy, from New Orleans.

Preliminaries for the event will begin June 20-22. All games will be played at the BREC Burbank Soccer Complex. For more information on the tournament and daily reports and results you can visit: http://championships.usyouthsoccer.org/regionIII/.
