ELSINORE VALLEY, CA (CNN) - From the ground, a high school parking lot looks like it's full of lousy drivers who can't park.

But from above, those bad parking jobs spell out "Marry me?" in Mazda Miatas.

"Originally, I didn't have enough cars for a question mark, but on the day, a bunch of extra cars showed up," said Colin Burgess.

That included a Miata with a custom yellow paint job for the dot on the question mark.

Why would anyone ask a girl to marry him using Miatas?

It goes back to the first dates between Burgess and Caitlin Lainoff.

"I asked him to take me for a fast ride in his tiny car," Lainoff said.

That tiny 1992 red Miata ended up forming the top of the "M" in marry.

Burgess used drones for aerial photography and recruited more cars through Miata forums and clubs, saying "hello fellow zoomers."

It took 44 cars to spell out the proposal.

Burgess spent the night before drawing chalk lines on the pavement.

To pull off his proposal, Burgess pretended he had to go shoot some aerial photos of real estate. He flew the drone while his girlfriend operated the camera.

After piloting the drone over the parking lot, he told Lainoff to pan down.

For a few seconds, she didn't get it.

"Colin actually had to prompt me, 'Well, babe, what does that say?'" Lainoff said. "When he went down on one knee then I was like, 'Oh, this is for me.'"

He nervously asked Lainoff to become his wife, and she said yes.

A photographer hiding in a bush captured their kiss.

But with a baby on the way, they may need something bigger than a Miata.
