LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

A 50-year-old Lake Charles woman has pleaded not guilty in connection with a criminal case against a local lawyer.

Vanessa Renee Tutson pleaded not guilty on Monday to filing a false public record.

Tutson has been accused of helping attorney Michael P. Ned in his attempt to obtain a protective custody order against his wife.

Court officials said Tutson's trial is set to begin Oct. 20 in front of Judge Sharon Wilson.

Ned, 43, who unsuccessfully ran for a 14th Judicial District Court seat, turned himself in to authorities in April. Ned lost to Wilson in the race to fill the unexpired term of Judge Wilford Carter, who retired in October 2013.

Ned was arrested on charges of domestic violence with child endangerment, two counts of violating protective orders and one count of filing a false report.
