Water well moratorium proposed in Sulphur

SULPHUR, LA (KPLC) -

City officials in Sulphur have proposed a moratorium on the drilling of new water wells within the city.

The proposed measure comes after businesses who use large amounts of water have expressed interest in having their own water wells.

Mayor Chris Duncan says he is concerned that water coming from a private well would not undergo the same treatment as the public water supply.

"Who's gonna regulate it? Who's gonna monitor it, and if somebody gets sick from the spray or something from this, because we just went through an amoeba scare -- but that was on surface water and this is groundwater -- we're concerned on a few things. We just need some questions answered," said Duncan.

The Sulphur City Council held a special meeting to introduce an ordinance on the proposed moratorium. A public hearing will be held Tuesday, July 1 at 5 p.m.
