Bulldogs finish 12th in NCAA Championship relay

EUGENE, OR (LA Tech sports information) -

It was a déjà vu moment for Louisiana Tech's 4x100m relay team Wednesday as the squad recorded a 12th place finish at the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive year.

The Bulldog relay squad of Jarvis Gotch, Trey Hadnot, Devin Henderson and Dennis Richardson ran 39.54, the seventh-fastest time in school history and a hundredth of a second (0.01) away from a season best.

"I thought we ran well today," head coach Gary Stanley said. "Our sticks were good and we were in second in our heat until the last 40 meters. I saw the times in the second team and the top two were awfully fast."

Louisiana Tech edged national powers Florida State (13th) and South Carolina (14th) by fractions of a second. South Carolina entered the NCAA Championships ranked third (out of the 24 advancing teams in Eugene) while Florida State ranked sixth. LA Tech entered the relay race ranked 18th.

"At the end of the day, finishing 12th in the nation isn't bad," Stanley added. "We beat some awfully big programs today. A lot of teams wish they could finish 12th in the nation."

Hadnot will return to the track Thursday at 6 p.m. CT/4 p.m. PT for the semifinal round of the 200m while Gotch will compete in the long jump at 6:30 p.m. CT/4:30 p.m. PT. In other action Thursday, Kim Francis will compete in the 100m hurdles semifinals at 7:20 p.m. CT/5:20 p.m. PT.

"I thought Trey ran really well and that bodes well for him tomorrow," Stanley added about Thursday's upcoming action. "He looked really quick out on the track."

The 12th place finish will ensure second team All-America honors for the quartet, to be officially announced Monday.

Last year at the NCAA Championships, the squad of Henderson, Hadnot, Niko Richey and Richardson also finished 12th with a time of 39.71.
