GULF OF MEXICO -

The U.S. Coast Guard responded to a downed helicopter in the Gulf of Mexico at about 2:40 p.m. on Wednesday, KATC-TV reports.

Witnesses said the helicopter, a Bell model 206-L4, went down about 60 miles south of Terrebonne Bay, near South Timbalier Block 317.

The Coast Guard said the helicopter was a civilian aircraft with two people aboard. The crew members deployed a life raft before the helicopter sank. There is no word yet on the identity of the crew members or the extent of any possible injuries.

The Coast Guard launched two aircraft and a patrol boat to assist in the search.
