“Skin color and sunlight exposure need to be considered for recommended daily allowance,” according to Dr. Adam Murphy, an instructor at the Feinberg School.
Important study illustrates the need to take Vitamin D Supplements, especially African-American Men living in cooler climates.

SARASOTA, FLORIDA, June 9, 2014, A very enlightening study was published by Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine which shows that African-American Men living in areas with low sunlight are up to 3x more likely to have a Vitamin D deficiency then their white counterparts. It also recommended that they take high levels of Vitamin D Supplements. “Skin color and sunlight exposure need to be considered for recommended daily allowance”, according to Dr. Adam Murphy, an instructor at the Feinberg School.

It seems that African-American men have lower levels of Vitamin D because the increased “melanin” in darker skin blocks the UV rays necessary for the body to produce the vitamin, Dr. Murphy said. He goes on to say: “It takes a dark-skinned male like myself 90 minutes three times a week to absorb enough sunlight to produce the recommended amount of Vitamin D compared to just 15 minutes three times a week for a Caucasian male.” Elderly Males are already considered a high risk group for Vitamin D deficiency, African-American Elderly Males should be considered a double high risk group in need of high daily doses, 5,000IU, of Vitamin D3.
