BANG FOR YOUR BUCK: Savings for allergy sufferers

(WMC) – The television ads for Allegra, Claritin and Zyrtec are relentless, but the experts at Consumer Reports recommend generics to save you big money and help with allergies.

Here is a Bang for Your Buck segment for all the allergy sufferers.

Most allergy drugs are a type called antihistamines and according to "Best Buy Drugs" there are no differences between pills and liquids, which means you can go for the lowest price.

Consumer Reports' experts recommend cetirizine and loratadine, two over-the-counter generics that work for a lot of allergy sufferers. If one doesn't work try the other one.

Here are three products that can help you save and two of the three contain those ingredients.

A 30 tablet bottle of Allegra's 24-hour relief, which is 180 milligrams, costs about $22, but the generic version at Walgreens called Wal-Fex Allergy is a little more than $16, saving you 26 percent.

Claritin 24 hour relief, which is loratadine, for 30 tablets at 10 milligrams at Target costs over $19. The Target generic called Up & Up Allergy Relief is just $5, that's a saving of 74 percent.

Zyrtec at CVS costs about $22, the same active ingredient cetirizine in a CVS generic costs a little more than $15 which is a savings of 30 percent.
