NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) -

The steep hills and beautiful weather was all that disc golfers needed Sunday.  Pro disc golfer Andrea Meyers traveled seven hours just to play the 18 hole course that lays on Pioneer Park. She said the love for the game started 10 years ago.

"In the round I played today I scored a 70. I came in second out of six women, but it was a pretty good weekend," Meyers said.

What attracted Meyers to this tournament was that it catered to women.

In her many years of experience, Meyers has played all over the United States and said Nacogdoches has one of the best layouts she has seen. East Texas native BJ Moody said the elevation is what draws people each year to the tournament.

"A lot of the courses are very flat and you're going to get to play through trees as far as obstacles go, but here and at the lake course the different elevation affects the flight of the disc more than the flight and wind," Moody said.

He further explained, that he is fortunate enough to play on the Pioneer Park course weekly. This is the second year Moody has played in the tournament and said that this year participation has doubled since last year. Organizer Steven Geyerman said the sport is growing in popularity because it's fun and affordable.

"Well it's the kind of game you can learn in an afternoon," Geyerman said.

The tournament has had a huge economic impact on the area, bringing in at least 400 people to Nacogdoches.

"They are coming in eating in our restaurant staying in our hotels for the prior six weeks," Geyerman said.

The tournament had 10 divisions. The winners won money and tons of gear. Geyerman said he can't wait to do it all again next year.
