Jury to hear testimony against former Southaven mayor

(WMC) - It took almost all Monday, but a jury is now ready to hear testimony against former Southaven Mayor Greg Davis first thing Tuesday morning. Both sides wrapped up opening statements just before 5 p.m.

Davis is on trial for two felony charges. He is accused of embezzlement, using a city gas card to fill up his own car, and also leasing a vehicle from the city without authorization. Both sides say this trial is not expected to be a lengthy one.

Potential jurors were asked several questions about their knowledge and familiarity with Greg Davis, the allegations against him and even his sexual orientation; all are important details because Davis' defense team asked the judge for a change of venue.

They believed it would be difficult for him to get a fair trial in DeSoto County. In fact, at one point when potential jurors were asked if they had seen news coverage on the topic, nearly the entire courtroom stood.

Most everyone said media attention would not impact their ability to be fair or impartial.

District Attorney John Champion expects to call six witnesses to testify against Davis, including three police officers, the city clerk, and someone from the tax assessor's office.

Davis' lawyer Steve Farese told jurors he believes no crime was committed. Many believe this case will come down to circumstantial evidence.

Davis was ordered to pay more than $70,000 after being "inappropriately reimbursed" by the city while serving as the mayor.
