Biloxi to consider changes to fireworks ordinance

Posted: Updated:
BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

You could start seeing more firework vendors in the City of Biloxi as the Fourth of July approaches.

In years past, there has been confusion about city ordinances on fireworks sales. WLOX News learned city leaders hope some new revisions to the ordinance will clear up confusion and make it easier for fireworks vendors to set up shop.

According to city leaders, the current ordinance on fireworks hasn't been interpreted properly.  That's why they say a revision is necessary.

The changes to the ordinance include allowing the retail sales of fireworks to the public in regional business zones within the City of Biloxi.

"We're considering opening up areas that are zoned properly and for those entrepreneurs that have a business license to sell fireworks, they can ask the city for that conditional use," said Ward 6 Council man Kenny Glavan.

The vendor would have to apply for conditional use from the planning commission and if it's approved the city council would then have to approve it also. Councilman Glavan says the changes would mean more funds for the city and convenience for residents.

"They'll see a few more firework stands in those areas that are zoned properly. And it will be good. I think it will be good for the city. You got more areas where you can purchase fireworks instead of going to other cities and buying those fireworks," said Glavan.

Another proposed change to the ordinance involves banning the sale of certain kinds of fireworks.

"There are fireworks that are sold with blasting or built, designed and made with blasting agents and that's more of your commercial fireworks. You don't see many of them. But we want to make sure that that loophole is closed up, so we don't have people going around in the city with the wrong type of fireworks that are very dangerous," said Biloxi Fire Chief Joe Boney.

Chief Boney says those fireworks with blasting agents can only be detonated by certified pyrotechnics experts.

If the modification to the ordinance is approved city leader say they want you to remember you are still not allowed to detonate fireworks within the City of Biloxi.
