BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Authorities are sounding the alarm about a new scam that is targeting the elderly. A person calls and poses as a representative from Entergy. The person informs that there is an outstanding balance on an electrical bill and threatens to cut off the electricity.

Elizabeth Holloway almost fell for this scam. She owns Bocage Bee and Honey Co. off Drusilla Ln. She said the person explained that she could pay her bill with a Green Dot money card. Frightened, she went to a local CVS looking for the card. Fortunately, the store manager told her she was falling for a scam. He told her that several elderly people had come in the store with the same problem.

Officials said there are other scams that are similar. Jim Stalls with the Better Business Bureau issued this statement:

"We are aware of this same type of scam using the name of the IRS and threatening the consumer with arrest for Tax Fraud for unpaid taxes. The same opportunity is given to the consumer to prevent being arrested.  We are aware of at least one local victim who bought a money card in the amount of $6,000 and called back with the account number. Of when he tried to cancel the card the money had already been withdrawn."

If you are a victim of a scam please call your local authorities.
