LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

The Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas held their 46th annual Powwow in Livingston on Friday and Saturday.

The two day event was filled with Alabama-Coushatta history, from ceremonial dances to traditional foods and handmade items.

This event is a special time for the tribe to gather together and celebrate their heritage and history, but is also a way for tribal members to reunite.

"A lot of our tribal members live off of the reservation and this is a way to bring a lot of our families together," said Alabama-Coushatta Powwow Chairman, Herbert Johnson Jr.

Though, Johnson said it's more than just a gathering of tribal member, it's also a way for the community and public to learn about the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas.

"A lot of our communities and not just here but surrounding communities don't really recognize natives being here, it's all in TV, movies and so forth, so it is for public education," said Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas Member, Violence Beene.

Nancy Mankin, who has attended past Powwow's says it's all about appreciating their history and art.

"The regalia and the music and just the appreciation for their hand work," said Mankin.

Mary Beverly, who has attended other Powwow's, says it's the dancing that keeps her coming back.

"Such a spiritual feeling for me, just seeing the people, it's just beautiful I couldn't wait to see it again," said Beverly.

The Alabama-Coushatta tribe of Texas hopes more people like Mary, will come out to share in their heritage.

"We are hoping to attract more and more dancers to come out and other tribes to come out and come have fun out in east Texas," said Beene.
