Community gathers for BBQ and Blues in Ocean Springs

OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) -

Friday evening, hundreds of people gathered in downtown Ocean Springs to show their support to the Historic Ocean Springs Association. It was all in efforts to help raise funds to go toward improvements to the 100-year-old Marshall Park.

"It says a lot about Ocean Springs when you come in and you see this beautiful green oasis and it's a gift that our group does for the city," HOSA member Melanie Allen said.

Over the past two decades, the HOSA has given donations to community projects to their beloved city. Friday night, they continued their efforts to keep up their restoration projects and ongoing care of Marshall Park.

"HOSA exists to do fun, community projects for Ocean Springs," Allen said. "In the 25 years we've been in service, we have donated more than $500,000 worth of projects to the city and Marshall Park is the core project in Ocean Springs."

Allen also says this special fundraiser event allows them to be one step closer to their goal of replacing the cedar shake roof on the bandstand that's set in the middle of the park.

"It's important today, one, because we want to raise some funds and we also love for the community to use Marshall Park," Allen said.

Jerry Fremin and his wife live in Ocean Springs, and they say seeing organizations like this doing their part in keeping up something so dear to the city is important.

"I think it exposes Ocean Springs for what it really is. It's a beautiful little town, and I think that some people that live here don't even realize the things that we have like this park and some of the other nice attractions here in Ocean Springs," Fremin said.

He says he's more than happy to come to fundraising events like this. After all, it's for his city.

"Every little bit helps. It just feels good that we were able to help them a little bit," Fremin said.

Allen says their goal for the event was to raise $3,000, and from the looks of the support from the community, they're headed in the right direction to have the new roof on the bandstand very soon.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST: First day of Fall is a hot one, with a few pop up showers possible

A few showers possible this afternoonA few showers possible this afternoon

For today, we will have a few small pop up showers in the afternoon. Rain chances are at only 20%, so not everyone will see rain. Any rain we do get, will not last long. There will be plenty of passing clouds, but that won’t stop the heat. Highs today will be in the low 90s, with heat indices in the mid to upper 90s! Even though fall is officially starting today, it certainly will not feel like it! By tonight, we will keep the rain chances low as all showers come to an end.

Could there be another RV park coming to Calcasieu Parish?  That was the big question at Thursday night's police jury meeting.  One by one, residents stood up voicing their opposition to another RV park.  "Would you guys want to look out your back door with your family and see an RV park," said resident Tina Knippers. The proposed RV park would be just off of Highway 108 West near Choupique Road in Sulphur.  Applicant Wendell Thibodeaux says he ...
