HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

It is true that women need to take certain precautions when it comes to detecting breast cancer.

However, the disease is not just reserved for women.

According to William Whitehead, a general surgeon at Hattiesburg Clinic, men also need to be cautious of the disease.

"I think its probably worth mentioning that one percent of breast cancers do occur in men, so it is, uh, not uncommon for men to have breast cancer. And its usually in older men, usually the median age is about 68. So, they should feel for hard lumps beneath the nipple," said Whitehead.

Whitehead also said certain medicines can cause breast cancer in men.

"It's not uncommon for men that are on blood pressure medication and other types of drugs that can cause enlargement of breast tissue beneath the nipple. This is called gynoclamastia, and that's not an uncommon problem either. But, any suspicious lump, pain or discomfort beneath the nipple should be brought to your doctor's attention," said Whitehead.
